My Encounter with an 'il' Literate Citizen

Recently  I went  for a walk with my neighbor. When we reached the Kundalahalli Main road foot path we had an encounter with our plumber Mr.Harish who was apparently cleaning the foot path. He was trying to remove a few branches of the mango tree which had been cut by the BESCOM workers. He asked for help as they were heavy and we did so. After we had cleaned the foot path and made it ready for the pedestrians to cross ,he bid us farewell  by telling us that 'somebody had to do this !' and he was pointing at the clean foot path. We both were very shocked at that moment at his farewell message and also what he had done. The uncle who was with me was aware that i write a blog on literacy and for me he questioned Harish uncle .The question was' till what standard did you study?' and astonishingly the answer was '10th grade' . Harish uncle was quite old and when he studied, where he studies passing 10th was a big deal. He left soon after that as he had to go home where his family awaited his presence.

We continued our walk and the rest of the time we kept discussing about Harish uncle's actions and all we could conclude was that you don't have to be very educated to have a civic sense and care for your country,it has to come from within. There are many chapters in our science textbook , english textbook and our hindi textbook which teach us that we should care for our environment but do you think that any of it helps ? 20 years down  the line we won't even remember what we studied and how we passed 10th! All that can make us do something like what Harish uncle did is our civic sense and care for our country, its people and our environment.
